Is Shu*Kura Worth It If You Do Not Drink Sake?

Shu*Kura Sake Train · Itinerary Planning

Koshino Shu*Kura is marketed as a train celebrating Niigata sake. Does that make it a poor choice for someone who does not drink alcohol? Not necessarily. The scenery, rail journey, design and atmosphere may still be rewarding—but you should choose the ticket and travel package with clear eyes, because some inclusions are built around tasting.

The experience is more than the sake counter

JR East presents Shu*Kura as a themed tourist train inspired by Niigata’s brewing culture and natural landscapes. The service itself, the windows, seating and sense of occasion can appeal to railway travelers and companions who are not tasting. A shared journey is still a shared journey even if different people choose different drinks.

The operator also lists soft drinks among onboard options. That is an important practical distinction from assuming the train offers nothing for a non-drinker. However, menus, availability and package inclusions can change by date and seat type.

Check the distinction between seat and package

JR East differentiates Car No. 1, available through specified travel packages, from Car No. 3, bookable with a ticket and reserved-seat arrangement. Do not assume a package with sake-related benefits gives full value to a guest who will not consume them.

Ask what is included for each passenger and whether a non-alcoholic option is provided. JR East’s 2026 seasonal announcement mentions soft-drink options on some packages, but that does not establish a permanent menu for every train.

Decide what you actually want from the ride

Your priority Likely fit Check first
Scenic and unusual train travel Potentially worthwhile Route and daylight timing
A food-and-drink package Depends on inclusions Non-alcoholic alternatives
Serious sake tasting Better fit for drinkers Tasting prices and rules
Traveling with a sake-loving companion Often a reasonable compromise Separate preferences and ticket types

Build the day around the route, not a bottle

There are different Shu*Kura variants serving Tokamachi, Niigata and Echigo-Yuzawa directions on selected days. For a non-drinking passenger, the destination and connection may matter more than the tasting list. Choose the route you would still enjoy without a complimentary pour.

Check the day’s service and the return train before choosing a non-refundable reservation. Some trains have special event or seasonal offerings that should not be generalized to the whole Shu*Kura family.

Frequently asked questions

Does a non-drinker have to join a tasting? No. Tasting is not what makes a train seat valid. Check the terms of your particular package and the onboard alternatives.

Can someone under 20 ride? Train eligibility and alcohol eligibility are separate. Sake is not served to travelers under Japan’s legal drinking age; check any package-specific age restrictions before booking.
