Suwa Five Sake Breweries: How the Gokuraku Set Works

Suwa · Tours & Tastings

Five sake breweries along one short stretch of street make Suwa unusually convenient to explore independently. But the most important preparation is not memorising five names: it is understanding how the current Gokuraku Set works, where to collect it and how to deal with breweries that are closed on your visit.

The five breweries and the short walking district

Maihime, Reijin, Honkin, Yokobue and Masumi stand along an approximately 500-metre stretch of Suwa’s historic road, according to the current official sake-walk website. That compact geography does not mean that you can always visit all five shops at the same time; each has a separate operating schedule.

What the official Gokuraku Set offers

The current Suwa tourism programme lists the set at ¥4,000 including tax and describes tastings at the five breweries or takeaway cup sake, alongside an original glass, bag, label stickers and a digital map. The product is a self-guided tasting scheme, not a guided group tour. Do not confuse an old web description of a cheaper physical stamp set with today’s official package.

Where you collect the set

The current programme instructs applicants to collect their set from the Suwa City Tourist Information Center before heading to their preferred breweries. That makes opening and pickup logistics just as important as the brewery walking distances. Verify the current booking and redemption procedure on the official programme website.

What happens if a brewery is closed?

The current programme notes that each brewery has different days off. In certain cases participants may receive takeaway cup sake for a closed location instead of an on-site tasting. This is a useful safety valve, but it isn’t a promise of all five live tasting counters on every date.

An easy first-timer plan

Arrive with time to collect the set, choose an order based on open hours, take breaks and pace the tasting. Make transport arrangements that do not involve driving after alcohol. If you are travelling with non-drinkers, check whether the current programme offers a suitable alternative before buying.

Questions before you go

Is the Gokuraku Set a guided tour?

Can I rely on the old ¥2,500 price?

No. The current official programme lists a different price; check the latest booking screen.
